Mid Century Style

For lovers of Mid Century residential architecture and design

For some reason impossible for me to fathom, the previous owners have replaced two bedroom doors and the bathroom door with Modernfold wood accordion doors! It will be impossible to match new replacement doors to the doors of the other two bedrooms, so I think we will have to get five new doors that match and be done with it. Problem is Home Depot and the other stores of the same type here in Quebec have no plain good quality doors available, even on special order! Everything has raised panels or disconcerting phony leaded glass and the like. Are there manufacturers that still make plain hardwood veneered doors of good quality and not the Masonite or cardboard ones everybody seems to be satisfied with?

Thanks!

I found a source for doors in Montreal. At first the rep told me to go to a store that carries their products. I asked for a store name in my region and was then told that they would deal directly with me since they had no dealer in my area. Told the guy what I needed and was quoted two prices for two different finishes. Then I dared ask for colour samples by email, what type of construction the doors quoted were (they have three types on their site) and shipping information. The latest email from them now tells me that is why they don't deal directly with the public as architetects would know exactly what they want!

Anybody here have similar experiences?

BTW I tried to get a local architect for a consultation and, since they don't see much money in that, simply get brushed off.

Has anyone here tried to get a recent architectural grad or a student to help them out?

There are some architectural door manufacturers that do solid face vs stile and rail doors. The Home and or most lumber yards are not going to be good sources for anything like this.

The suppliers to contact for these architectural type doors are generally going be listed under "doors and hardware" or commercial doors in the yellow pages. A couple of manufacturer names would be....VT Industries, Weyerhauser, Algoma, Eggers ( all in USA). Lambdon is a canadian manufacturer, althought I am not sure if they do solid doors.

My company, Woodfold, manufacturers a full line of accordion doors. Accordion doors were used as closet doors in mid century homes, before inexpensive bifolds and sliding doors became common.

OUr website is www.woodfold.com

Hi,

Just joined the group. I know it is many months since this posted, but do you still need help with doors? We have distribution in Toronto and may also be able to sell through someone in Mtl. We make the kinds of doors you were seeking. - Mitch www.lyndendoor.com
